Burg Meersburg, also called Alte Burg or Altes Schloss, rises above the lower town of Meersburg on the northern shore of Lake Constance and is regarded as the oldest inhabited castle in Germany. A first fortification is assumed to date back to the 7th century, although no building fabric from that era survives.
